Job Summary

Is responsible for and ensures a safe lab operation by holding safety meetings, auditing lab activities, and by providing the necessary training and equipment to perform all work safely. Directs overall laboratory activities for the Lemont Refinery. Provides accurate and timely test results, analyses, and recommendations on problem solving necessary to meet product quality standards, intermediate stream quality for optimum unit operation, and for outside agency review. Promotes continued growth in laboratory analytical testing.  Provides analytical expertise, equipment maintenance and computer expertise for solving process and laboratory problems. Plans and directs work, provides training, facilitates interaction with other work groups, establishes goals and objectives and sets performance criteria that supports the overall Refinery mission. Reviews candidates to fill vacancies for employees as well as contract personnel.  Conducts performance reviews.  Establishes and manages operating budgets.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related discipline
  • Minimum of 10 years related job experience, 15 preferred
  • Working knowledge of Refining and Laboratory operations
  • Refinery or equivalent experience related to line assignments in Operation or technical support to operation to assure understanding of criticality and application of analytical data
  • Must have valid driver's license
  • Candidates must be able to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credentials Card)
    • ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
      The Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with the rules established by the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration. Candidates selected for employment must meet eligibility criteria to obtain a TWIC card. Job Duties

  • Manage Supervisors, Chemists, and Contract Personnel.  Communicate with Lab personnel and refinery clients to facilitate accurate, timely and reliable test data as well as daily support to Operations.  
  • Responsible for all Lab employee safety performance including, but not limited to, safety meetings, safety audits, housekeeping programs, completion of ART, and equipment refresher training.
  • Establish annual laboratory goals consistent with Refinery goals to use in employee development plan.
  • Ensure OSHA ventilation and EPA regulatory (NPDES) compliance.
  • Track overall testing performance and prepare reports.  Prepare the annual expense budget for the Laboratory and control costs to meet budget targets.  Report performance versus target.
  • Formulate and execute the Laboratory’s long range equipment plan to ensure the Lab is moving ahead technologically.
  • Directs the interface with the IT Department for timely support for LIMS and specific computer supported analyses.
